Funasset, the UK-based technology pioneer behind some of the most trusted printing, connectivity, and hybrid mail solutions on the market, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Since 1986, the company has helped thousands of printer and mainframe manufacturers, businesses, and public and health sector organisations streamline operations, reduce costs, and modernise the way they manage documents and mail.

What began as a specialist provider of mainframe-to-printer connectivity has evolved into a leader in digital transformation -supporting organisations through every major shift in business technology over the last four decades.

From Mainframes to Modern Workflows: A Legacy of Practical Innovation

Funasset’s story starts in the mid-1980s when it was established by the late Tom Neave in a time when businesses relied heavily on mainframes and proprietary systems. Printing was essential, but connectivity was often a bottleneck. Funasset solved that problem with their TN Interface hardware and software solution that allowed servers and mainframes to communicate seamlessly with normally incompatible printers and print data. It quickly became a trusted tool for organisations that needed to continue using their legacy systems with the latest print technology.

Building on that success, Funasset introduced SpoolQ, a powerful software platform that gave users unprecedented control over print queues and output management. For many, it was the first time they could centralise, automate, and audit their printing processes - long before “workflow automation” became an industry buzzword.

SilentPrint: Bringing Batch Printing Into the Modern Era

As businesses moved from mainframes to distributed networks and Windows‑based systems, Funasset adapted again. The launch of SilentPrint marked a major milestone: a robust, automated batch‑printing solution capable of processing high volumes of documents without user intervention.

SilentPrint became a staple in sectors such as finance, logistics, healthcare, and government - anywhere reliability, speed and ease of use, were essential. It remains one of Funasset’s most widely deployed technologies allowing users across the globe to print or convert documents by simply dropping them in a folder.

Leading the Shift to Hybrid Mail

In the 2010s, as digital transformation accelerated, Funasset once again anticipated the next major shift: the move from traditional mailrooms to cloud-based, automated, hybrid mail solutions.

Funasset’s hybrid mail platforms enabled organisations to send physical and digital mail directly from their desktop or business system -without the need for multi-department printing equipment, franking machines, or manual handling. This innovation dramatically reduced costs and improved efficiency for local government, NHS trusts and private-sector enterprises.

Today, Funasset’s hybrid mail technology powers some of the most advanced and scalable mail solutions in the UK and beyond, supporting millions of documents in both digital and printed format every year. It is also used by Xerox and Civica to enable them to integrate mailing solutions for corporate business and the public sector.

With a recent rebrand and a new interface, Funasset continues to champion the management and delivery of physical and digital communication.

40 Years of Trust, Reliability, and Forward Thinking

Across four decades, Funasset has remained true to its core mission: to make complex processes simple, efficient, and accessible. The company’s longevity is rooted in:

  • Deep technical expertise across hardware, software, and cloud platforms

  • A commitment to reliability, with solutions trusted in mission‑critical environments

  • A customer‑first approach, ensuring every product solves real operational challenges

  • Continuous innovation, adapting to new technologies and industry demands

From mainframe connectivity to hybrid mail, Funasset has consistently delivered solutions that stand the test of time.

Looking Ahead

As Funasset enters its fifth decade, the company continues to invest in new technologies that help organisations modernise their document and communication workflows. With hybrid mail adoption accelerating and digital transformation reshaping every sector, Funasset is well‑positioned to lead the next wave of innovation.

“Reaching 40 years is a milestone we’re incredibly proud of,” states Rob Webb, Director of Funasset. “Our success has always come from listening to our customers, understanding their challenges, and building solutions that genuinely make their lives easier. That philosophy will continue to guide us for many more years.”
